In its working principle, the instrument first emits stable infrared light from the light source. This beam enters the Michelson interferometer, where the periodic movement of the moving mirror generates interference light containing information across all wavelengths. When this interference light passes through the analyte placed in the sample cell, the sample molecules selectively absorb infrared energy at specific frequencies, thus allowing the interference light to carry information about the sample's molecular structure. Subsequently, the detector converts the interference light signal carrying sample information into an electrical signal, which is then sampled at high speed by the computer. Finally, using a Fast Fourier Transform algorithm, the time-domain interferogram is converted into a frequency-domain spectrum, yielding the sample's infrared absorption spectrum with absorbance or transmittance as the ordinate and wavenumber or wavelength as the abscissa.
This technology, leveraging the advantages of Fourier transform, such as high throughput, high signal-to-noise ratio, and high wavenumber accuracy, can rapidly and accurately resolve the molecular structure and chemical composition of substances.
